Job description

OpenGoSim is hiring three new developers to join our team in the mission to deliver the next generation CO2 and H2 storage simulator.

We are a small team, and you will have the opportunity to significantly impact the company’s current developments. We need creative, flexible team members who want to work free from the constraints of a large organisation. We are offering both a competitive salary and an equity package to share in the long-term success of the business.

We are very flexible about work location, and we offer you the possibility to work remotely from the UK and Europe, from home or from a private office in your chosen location. And if you prefer, you can always join one of our team members in Edinburgh, Oxford, London, Taunton or Barcelona.

You will be required to travel once every 2-3 months, for meetings with the rest of the team, and other work duties such as training courses, conferences and visits to clients.

If you want to join an early-stage business and make a difference in the fast-growing Carbon Capture and Sequestration and hydrogen storage markets, please get in touch.

The Company

OpenGoSim is a company specialising in the development of reservoir engineering software for subsurface CO2 and H2 storage, a new and fast-growing industry ready to make a key contribution to our society in achieving the net-zero emissions target. With clients at the forefront of the carbon capture and storage technology, and a strong innovation culture, OpenGoSim will provide accurate and easy to use modelling tools for the next generation of reservoir engineers, who will be facing the new challenges posed by the energy transition.

See below the description of the three positions we are hiring for.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1) Senior scientific simulation software developer

  • Start Date : As soon as possible.
  • Location : Remote/Hybrid/Office
  • Salary : DOE
  • Benefits : equity package

You will be working on challenging tasks to add new physics modelling capabilities to the simulator as well as resolving the daily issues faced by our clients when simulating carbon capture and storage (CCS) and underground hydrogen storage (UHS) problems. You will have a key role in new software projects, trying innovative ideas in a stimulating environment, with the opportunity to shape the future of a new software product and establish new modelling practices in the industry.

The ideal candidate has a background in physics or engineering with a solid maths foundation and enthusiastic attitude to scientific programming. A PhD in a relevant field and at least 10 years’ experience in the industry is the background we are looking for, and we welcome applications from senior developers with lead experience as we anticipate adding other members as the user base continues to grow.

The coding languages used at OpenGoSim are modern Fortran, C, C++, Python and Cuda.

2) Scientific simulation software developer

  • Application deadline: 10 Sep 2024
  • Start Date : 23 Sep 2024.
  • Location UK : Remote/Hybrid/Office
  • Salary : 41-45k GBP per annum
  • Benefits : see KTP application

You will be working on challenging tasks to add new physics modelling capabilities to the simulator as well as resolving the daily issues faced by our clients when simulating carbon capture and storage (CCS) and underground hydrogen storage (UHS) problems. You will work along an experienced team on ongoing and new software projects, discussing and trying innovative ideas in a stimulating environment.

The ideal candidate has a background in physics or engineering with a solid maths foundation and enthusiastic attitude to scientific programming. A PhD in a relevant field and at least two years’ experience in developing scientific simulation software in either industry or academia is the background we are looking for. The coding languages used at OpenGoSim are modern Fortran, C, C++, Python and Cuda.

We welcome applications from early career researchers who want to move to industry to be trained and integrated into the OpenGoSim (OGS) development team.

The transition from academia or another industry will be assisted by a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) program, in collaboration with Heriot-Watt University. This collaboration will guide the new member of staff into the challenges OGS is working on, providing academic support and tailored training courses. The initial contract is for 18 months, during which you will be employed by Heriot-Watt University, however you will work under the supervision of an OGS developer on a daily basis. At the end of this project, you will have gained valuable knowledge and be well integrated into the team, and we envisage to offer you a contract for a permanent position with OpenGoSim.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3) Front-end scientific software developer

  • Start Date : As soon as possible.
  • Location : Remote/Hybrid/Office
  • Salary : DOE
  • Benefits : equity package

You will be working on our graphical software package Stratus, designing and implementing new capabilities, as well as maintaining and supporting the existing code. Stratus prepares the input and visualises the output from our CO2 and H2 storage simulator, while providing a multi-platform submission system (local, cloud). You will be discussing and trying new ideas in a stimulating environment, with the opportunity to shape the future of a new software product and establish new modelling practices in the industry.

The ideal candidate has at least three years’ experience in developing graphical packages for engineering applications, such as reservoir engineering, fluid dynamics or structural finite element analysis. It would be an advantage if the candidate has worked with libraries such as modern OpenGL and wxWidgets. Stratus is mainly coded in C++11, with some use of the AWS SDK library to access cloud capabilities.
